  Since its inception in 1994, Nick-San has been one of the most popular local sushi restaurants, with Chefs Angel Carbajal and Masayuki Nikura crafting a creative and innovative fusion of Japanese cuisine with traditional Mexican ingredients. This sort of fusion has become quite common among area restaurants, but Nick-San was the first, and remains the best. Sample their extensive menu of rolls, as well as house specialties like tempura oysters curry yaki, blue fin tuna sashimi, and beef filet serranito. Lobster lovers may choose from an embarrassment of riches that includes clear lobster rolls, lobster angel sauteed in mustard sauce, fried lobster curry, and lobster sambal marinated in saki, soy sauce, ginger, and garlic, and bathed in sweet and sour chile sauces.

Nicksan – A dynamic merger of Japanese Cuisine and Mexican Ingredients

Imagine a fresh seafood restaurant specializing in the best of Japanese cuisine yet flavored with a spicy assortment of Mexican ingredients. Where plating and presentation are as artistic and sensory as the dishes are delectable. The result is Nicksan, an ingenious menu and luscious variety of sashimi, nigiri, sushi, tempura and fresh seafood – all with a Mexican twist.

This cultural tango of dueling cuisines is the brainchild of executive chefs and owners Angel Carbajal and Masayuki Niikura. However, the dueling concept of cuisines actually ends up being a symbiotic relationship of complementing flavors. Portions are served family-style and are meant to share, which works out great for tasting more of the many outstanding menu selections. The Nicksan location at the Shoppes at Palmilla is the newest addition with the original restaurant located in Cabo San Lucas. Both locations feature the same menu. However, with the proximity of Nicksan to the exclusive and celebrity-favorite resort – Palmilla – the One and Only, don’t be surprised if you happen to spot a stray celeb hankering for Mexican-inspired sushi. Specialties include sea bass filet with citric oils, tuna pokki, and chasoba shrimp – a dish of uji green tea pasta with sautéed shrimp, green curry, lemon grass and ginger – a fast favorite with my two college kids. A customer-favorite is the Tuna Tostado, a rice cracker tostada decked with fresh yellow fin tuna belly, topped with avocado, salsa, sesame seeds, and blessed with a habanero red onion sauce. (The special salsa is a signature of the restaurant; blended with a touch of wasabi it provides a delightful kick to this appetizer.)Be sure to try the Goyto Age, a deep-fried tempura California chili stuffed with crab and topped with a special sesame dressing. Another treat is the Scallops Dinamita – a dish served in a scallop shell consisting of baked scallops from the Sea of Cortez and stone crab mixed with white mushrooms, masago, chives and a spicy red sauce. One of my favorites is the lobster roll with lobster tempura, fresh greens, mango sauce, black sesame and a mustard sauce. And you can’t go wrong with the lobster and shrimp tempura with vegetables. Because Nicksan is popular with the locals as well as seasoned travelers, reservations are recommended, especially on weekend nights and during high season.
